A few examples of how we have supported the families in our care.

Case Study

A Founder's Liquidity Event

The founder of a recently sold family-owned industrial group, whose adult children live in Switzerland and abroad.

Client Goals

  • Turn the proceeds of the sale into a long-term plan for the whole family.
  • Agree how wealth would be shared between generations.
  • Prepare the children for a role in the family's affairs.

Our Approach

We met individually with the founder and their children to understand their respective priorities for the family’s wealth. Those conversations shaped an investment strategy and a structure for the family's assets, developed with our legal and tax specialists.

We then helped the family write a family charter setting out how decisions would be made and ran an education programme for the children covering investment and their future responsibilities.

Outcomes

The family transitioned from ownership of a single operating business to a diversified portfolio, supported by an agreed framework for managing its wealth and making decisions. The children now take part in the family's annual meeting, and McPherson Reed continues to act as the family's office.

A Family Across Several Countries

A second-generation family seeking an organised approach to wealth held across multiple banks and countries.

Client Goals

  • See the family's full financial position in one place.
  • Reduce the number of banking relationships and their cost.
  • Understand and address the family's main risks.

Our Approach

We gathered the family's holdings across all its banks and structures into a single set of accounts and set up consolidated reporting to a schedule the family agreed. Tax specialists worked from one shared picture, coordinated by the McPherson Reed team.

We then reviewed the family's banking arrangements and consolidated them with a smaller number of banks on better terms. A risk review identified gaps in insurance and in the protection of personal information, which the family addressed with specialist advisers.

Outcomes

The family now receives one consolidated report, their filings are coordinated across countries, and their banking is simpler to manage. They have a current perspective of their main risks and a plan for keeping them up to date.

Giving With Purpose

A family with a history of philanthropy, looking to donate in a shared direction and involve the next generation.

Strategic PhilanthropyFamily Governance and Education

Client Goals

  • Give with a shared sense of purpose.
  • Choose a suitable structure for the family's giving.
  • Give younger members an active role in philanthropic decisions.

Our Approach

We worked with the family to review its past giving and agree on the causes they wanted to focus on. With our legal partners, we set up a structure for their philanthropy and defined how grants would be proposed and approved.

Outcomes

A grants committee now brings the younger generation together with their parents, and McPherson Reed supported its members through their first decisions. Each year, we review with the family what their grants have achieved and where their interests are leading.
